This device may not 100% confirm if you have diabetes, but it's a damn good indicator if your above 6 after fasting that you need to go see your doctor asap.

Isn't fasting levels of 5.6 - 6.9 mmol/l considered prediabetic and over 7 is diabetic? And then there is dawn phenomenon and somogyi effect that can affect some.

And for best results, only test after not eating/ drinking for at least twelve hours to get a more accurate reading. Water can be consumed.

Some pharmacists will even help you do your first test or do it with a medical doctor (even at a walk in clinic)...

fruitpunch.ben wrote: yeah diabetes sucks! My wife (a nurse)'s comment is that it's not diabetes itself necessarily that is the worse, it just makes every other problem you have 5 times worse. Wounding healing takes way longer. Every other medical condition comes with heaps more complications.

What that also means is WATCH YOUR DIET AND EXERCISE. Type 2 diabetes is usually controllable and even reversible with (large) lifestyle changes. I have heard it happen: friend got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes: doctor gave his standard spiel: you have two options. Medication for the rest of your life, or eat much healthier and smaller amounts and get lots of exercise.

They chose option 2, huge diet changes, heaps of exercise. came back months later and the type 2 diabetes was completely gone. Doctor was flabbergasted, said in decades of asking no one had ever taken option 2 before.

1. People always choose option 2, but can people stick to the new regime for the rest of their lives? There are no noticeable side effects in pre-diabetes and people don't/can't keep it up over the long term.
2. type 2 diabetes like alcoholism is never gone completely. You can control it for a time, but its a losing battle as time passes and you age. Thing break down as you age.
3. If you are pre-diabetic, you need to keep testing for the rest of your life as there will be a time where medication will be required.

I'll give it another try, says I'm getting the free meter and 10 strips delivered to my door.

Remember doing this a while ago, ended up instead of the actual meter being sent out they mailed me a coupon for a free meter with purchase at a pharmacy. [Accu-Chek] FREE Blood Glucose Meter + 10 test strips - Page 4 - RedFlagDeals.com Forums (4)

I think you are confusing HbA1c and fasting blood glucose. HbA1c is measured in % and is an average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months.

HbA1c is a better measure since it's like a 3-month rolling average, but this tool won't give that value.
Magnitudes are oddly close between fasting blood sugar mmol/L and HbA1c percentage, slight differences though.

Former Pharm Tech here:

Yes! Most insurance policies will cover glucose strips, lancets and needles but it must be a valid prescription written by a prescriber (Dr, NP)

If you're going to be testing your sugar on any kind of regular basis your best bet is to just get a Freestyle Libre so you don't have to constantly prick yourself. Your fingers will thank you.

To be nobody but yourself - in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting. -- E. E. Cummings
